In 1942, a large unit of Soviet troops finds itself in a German "cauldron" - the army is connected to the rear only by a narrow isthmus surrounded by swamps. The Germans are preparing a breakthrough, and there is an experienced saboteur among the Russians. To expose him, the NKVD introduces one of its best employees, Major Urusov, who takes three young intelligence officers with him. Urusov constantly has new suspects, but each version falls apart, as luck would have it. In the finale, Urusov, risking his life, exposes a saboteur whom no one initially thought to suspect, and the scouts, together with a handful of partisans, stop the advance of the German division.
