Captain Vera Ershova and her team receive a new assignment. They will have to investigate the circumstances of the fire that took the life of the school guard Simonov. At first, it seems that an accident occurred, but Sapronov's trained eye quickly notices inconsistencies. Bobrykin finds out that Simonov used to work as a fire inspector. A strange death for a man with such a profession! Soon, the "Old Guard" comes to the conclusion that a murder has been committed, and a very inventive one at that. And the criminal, obviously, does not intend to stop. Catching the villain is not so easy, because he uses ingenious traps to deal with his victims, which he sets in advance. One thing is clear: each of them is somehow connected with fire... The rivalry between Bobrykin and Sapronov for the heart of Lieutenant Colonel Romanova reaches a new level, and Vera falls more and more in love with Garik, whom she met during the investigation of one of the previous cases. The situation is complicated by the fact that Garik is married, and Vera's feelings for him could cost her dearly.
